Besides Twilight? I've loved reading Chaim Potok's books. I've read the following over the past few years:
ReplyDelete* The Chosen, 1967
* The Promise, 1969
* My Name is Asher Lev, 1972
* In the Beginning, 1975
* Davita's Harp, 1985
* The Gift of Asher Lev, 1990
* I Am the Clay, 1992
* The Gates of November, 1996
Bridget,
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try them out! Thank you!
I'm with Bridget. I am fascinated with Potok and especially loved the first three she listed and The Gift of Asher Lev.
ReplyDeleteI also love anything by Georgette Heyer.
=)
Many of your favorites are some of my favorites too. I loved "Left to Tell" Immaculee Ilibigiza. If you haven't read it- it is a true story about a woman's survival and discovery of God during the Rwandan Holocaust. It is amazing! I also like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Diary of Anne Frank, the Poisonwood Bible, John Adams, and about a million others.
ReplyDeleteJennie,
ReplyDeleteYES, I forgot about a Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Loved it. I'm so excited about all these books! The librarians are sick of me asking for a good one every time I visit.
My two all time favorite books are
ReplyDelete1) Gone With The Wind
2) Tuesdays With Morrie
I agree with you. There is NOTHING like losing yourself in a good book.
My sentimental, longtime favorites are The Hiding Place and To Kill a Mockingbird! :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is "Snowflower and the Secret Fan" Follows the life of a woman in China during the foot binding era. I really learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteI also appreciated "The Wednesday Letters"
I love many of those books. One of my favs is The Glass Castle. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is right up there for me, too.
ReplyDeleteI loved "Two From Gallilee." It is the fictional love story of Joseph and Mary. However, I haven't read it since I was a teenager... Who knows, I might find it corny now, but I remember loving it then!
ReplyDeleteIn My Hands, by irene Opdyke
ReplyDeleteMy sister's keeper
escape, by carolyn jessop (page turner!!!)
angels and demons, dan brown
those are my most recent favs!
Book selections are good- I'm seconding the Georgette Heyer books, John Adams, and the Chaim Potok ones as well.
ReplyDeleteMolly= movie Alice
Vic= movie Emmett
[much better-looking than movie Edward!]
LOVE A Tree Grows in Brooklyn! Recently read The Hiding Place....incredible! I'm going to have to check out more of them on you list....
ReplyDeleteMolly, I love your blog! You have to read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins....best ever!
ReplyDeleteMolly, it's my pleasure. I'm glad you can have a great time laughing at a vampire's expense. ha ha ha. I also liked Snowflower and the Secret Fan that Jeanette recommended.
ReplyDeleteAre you on Goodreads.com? Friend me if you are. I also really liked The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less. Yeah, the title really is that long and I think your would appreciate this mother's creativity and literary prowess.
Another great one that I read a while back was His Favorite Wife: Trapped in Polygamy by Susan Ray Schmidt. That one is such an eye opener.

ReplyDeleteMolly that quote is still on my closet wall of my parents' old house at heise-how funny! And so true. Can't wait to read your list. You should read Kitchen Table Wisdom (Whig is not AT ALL as cliche as its title, FYI) I think it will help you sleep. Dr. Rachel Remen is the author. Seriously. It changed so many things for me. Love ya girl!
ReplyDeleteI 100% second Kate's recommendation, Kitchen Table Wisdom. Dr. Remen also has a second book, My Grandfather's Blessings. Both are beautiful! Also loved Terry Ryan's Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 words or Less. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteIf you like essays, I REALLY love Anne Fadiman's Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader. I reread it ALL the time. Also, Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift From the Sea

Lewis's Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life; Kim Edwards's The Memory Keeper's Daughter; Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (Penguin Classics); Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring; anything by Thomas Hardy; and the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.
