Headshot Trail

I do have a life outside of my grief. I haven't blogged much about what I actually do to fill my time other than think about and miss and ache for and long for and cry for and pray for and dream of my Lucy. Whew. I do do that a lot. But I also live. I. HAVE. AMAZING. FRIENDS. Oh, if you only knew my friends. They are the spunkiest, spiciest, kick-out-of-life people that you are drawn to in every way. Between some get togethers and projects (and more projects)with these said crazy theatre friends, to date nights with Vic, to family parties, home improvement projects, Thanksgiving, and lots of work endeavors, (and more work) I have been a busy little girl. VERY BUSY.

A group of MDT (Music/Dance/Theatre--my major in college) friends came up last month for a Fall Fun get together. My friend Erin was just cast in Wicked and I am so happy for her! Cody and Val just returned from performing at the Venetian in China as well as entertainers on a cruise ship (to see the world as a married couple and get paid for it!), and you may recognize Jeff Stevens from the Liken Scriptures movies, he also just returned from a performing stint in China. Emily, my dear friend who was a lead in Napoleon Dynamite was also there. It was a hoot. Can you guess which pumpkin won?

Between singing karaoke at the top of our lungs and dancing around my living room, we squeezed in a game of Catch Phrase. On one round of the game, when Erin had the floor, she was throwing out clues for Val and I to guess the right catch phrase. We quickly guessed part of the phrase which was the word "paper". Her next clue went something like this, " Usually an 8 by 10 sheet..." We both yelled out "HEADSHOT!" We thought we had it. Then in simultaneous tumultuation we concluded with "headshot trail!" Erin started laughing so hard as the timer announced our fate. "PAPER TRAIL, YOU FOOLS!" You see, as actors, the narcissistic necessity of a "self portrait" to be taken with you wherever you go, is a vital and important part of our business. And sadly, they are usually printed on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. But welcome to the brain of a performer. We were busting up all night over that one. Who leaves a trail of evidence in the form of a headshot trail? "Yes, officer, that's right. We know exactly who committed the crime. His height, weight, hair and eye color, phone number, address, and exactly which shows he has been performing in over the last 15 years. We have all of this same information on the accomplices. A very good looking bunch if I must say."

Which got me thinking. There is a very long "headshot trail" of evidence in my life pointing the way to who I am today. The people whose lives have influenced and overlapped mine in a poignant and very real way. The slide show of my past and even my future is not comprised of simply me alone. It is made up of countless individuals weaving and coloring my life's experiences. From reading my blog entries, or journal, or scrolling through my phone, reading old yearbooks, examining my facebook account, or hearing the stories that come out of my mouth, you would see a pattern of faces flashed in and out of the almost 31 years of my life; creating a trail leading straight to my heart. I have never been more grateful for the real people behind these headshots than I am now, in my time of greatest need. Truly.

  2. What a great reminder of how people make up a huge part of who we are, not to mention make life bearable and well worth living. I have come to the conclusion that all that matters in life- what really makes us happy, sad, joyful, angry, jealous, etc. etc. etc. is our relationships with others. Family, co-workers, bosses, all the people the are apart of our lives. What a blessing to be surrounded by such great people.
